Suits for Success Clothing Drive Print E-mail
Wednesday, 28 November 2012

The Clearfield Youth City Council is sponsoring a “Suits for Success” clothing drive, held now through December 21. The drop off point for the clothing items listed below is the Clearfield City building, Third Floor, Executive Department, 55 S. State Street.

Youth City Council members were aware of similar dress drives for women, and thought it would be great to take it a step further and hold a drive for men’s professional clothing.

“The goal of “Suits for Success” is to assist those who can’t afford to purchase a new business suit for the purpose of obtaining employment,” said Youth City Council member, and drive chairperson Aubree Matheson. “Professional clothing increases confidence and in most cases is expected. With the community’s help, and the financial stability of meaningful employment the lives of these individuals and their families can be transformed!”

The collected items will be donated to the Family Connection Center in Clearfield and/or St. Anne’s Homeless Shelter in Ogden.

The group is requesting donations of the following new or gently used items:

• Dress pants/slacks
• Suit coats
• Long-sleeve dress shirts (solid color)
• Short-sleeve dress shirts (solid color)
• Dress shoes
• Dress belts
• Ties (simple designs are best)

Featured Business - On Q Music Print E-mail
Wednesday, 28 November 2012
onq.pngDaniel Quintana, the owner of On Q Music never thought that a crush he had in second grade would lead him to his life’s work.

“She played the piano, so I took lessons, too, until I was 12. Then I played the trombone from seventh to tenth grade. While in high school, I went to a rock concert, and two days later bought my first guitar. When deciding what to major in in college I realized I’d already been playing music for 16 years. I had a passion and love for music, so I enrolled in the Music Education program at Weber State University and graduated with a B.M.E. in 2008.”

Quintana wanted to share his passion for music with others, so he began teaching guitar and piano lessons 13 years ago. He opened On Q Music about four years ago and has been at his current location, the red and white building on State Street across from Kent’s Market, for about 3 years. “We’re a school, not a music store. I’ll make recommendations on what to buy, but other than instrument rentals, a few guitars, music books, and local artists’ CDs, we teach music here.”

With eight music teachers and over 90 students a week, On Q Music offers piano, drum, guitar, vocal, clarinet, violin, viola, bass and cello lessons. Quintana’s instructors are either currently enrolled Weber State (WSU) music major students, or fellow WSU music major graduates.

“I like to support the college. I get positive feedback from the professors about On Q students who continue their music education at WSU - about how much further along our students areonq2.png in knowledge and technique,” said Quintana.

According to Quintana, learning a musical instrument teaches a student, among other things, discipline, categorizing, and math skills. “I love to teach and I love when I have a breakthrough with a student.”

Private lessons at On Q Music range from $52 to $70/month based on the music teacher’s experience. Half-hour lessons are typically spent one-third on reading music and theory, a third on drills and technique, such as chords, scales and arpeggios, and a third on a song that the student wants to learn.

“My teaching philosophy is that the student has to feel happy with their progress on the instrument, and learn to play music they enjoy. The parents should also feel happy with the investment they’re making in their child’s lessons,” said Quintana.

On Q Music offers instrument rentals, including trumpets, clarinets, flutes, violins, trombones, saxophones, guitars and electric basses. In addition to lessons, On Q Music holds Open Mic night at their store every few months - open to anyone who wants to share their musical talents. They also hold a student recital once/ year at the North Davis Library, Clearfield Branch. On Q Music is a great resource if you’re looking for live music for your next event.

In addition to selling CDs and t-shirts of local artists at the store, Quintana himself is a member of three musical groups featuring three music genres – one that performs classical music at weddings and events, a cover band “Platinum Platypus” and a heavy metal rock band “Outcome.”

For those wanting to give the gift of music, On Q Music sells gift certificates – great for the holidays or birthdays. On Q Music hours are Monday-Friday, 2:00pm-7:00pm (there is some flexibility with lesson times, and during the summer classes are offered mornings). For more information about lessons and booking talent call (801) 309-1879.

Featured Manufacturer - North Davis Cabinet and Design Print E-mail
Wednesday, 28 November 2012
ndcd1.jpgYou might not think of a cabinetry business as a manufacturer in the strict sense of the word. Yet upon entering the North Davis Cabinet and Design cabinetry shop you know you are witnessing true old-fashioned, hand-crafted workmanship at its best. From careful hand sanding to hand-sprayed varnishes, to laser-cut slabs of Italian and Brazilian granite, clients of North Davis Cabinets and Design truly get a custom, quality product.

Like a lot of small businesses, North Davis Cabinet and Design started in a garage. The Rasmussen brothers, Ray and Elvin, began their business in 1968 in Roy, growing the business over the years, eventually moving to their location in Freeport West/Clearfield. North Davis Cabinet and Design currently occupies five buildings, including a show room/design center, two woodworking shops, a granite cutting facility, and warehousing. The Rasmussen brothers’ sons, cousins Cory and Wayne, now run the business their fathers started almost 45 years ago.

“Combined, North Davis Cabinets has over 100 years of experience in the cabinetry business,” said Jesse Henderson, General Manager of North Davis Cabinet and Design. “We have 63 employees; one of our custom woodworkers has been here for over 30 years. We have a lot of experience going into our client’s projects.”

From new construction to remodels to commercial offices to custom closet systems, North Davis Cabinet and Design is equipped to handle all phases of a project.

“We are a one-stop shop. We have the resources to take care of the whole project,” explained Henderson. “Because we manufacture from scratch, doing it all in-house, this is a benefit to the customer because this gives us control over lead times. We don’t have to place an order with someone else to get a door repaired, for instance, which would push out the completion date of a project.”

About 80% of North Davis Cabinet and Design’s business is new construction for contractors, and 20% are ndcd2.jpgremodels of existing homes.

Mainly serving Davis and Weber counties, according to Henderson, they’ve done a lot of remodels in the Clearfield area. An outdated kitchen, an entertainment center for your living room, the remodel of a bathroom or basement, a home-based office or a better way to organize your closets - the folks at North Davis Cabinet and Design can do it all, and then some.

North Davis Cabinet has two showrooms – the one in Clearfield and a second in Ogden on 36th Street.

“When you visit one of our showrooms, a designer sits down with you and reviews the scope of the project with you,” Henderson said. “Do you have an existing set of plans, or can we draw up plans for you? We show you what we can do, based on what you desire, and your budget. We help you figure out what products you’ll need, as well as design elements, such as wood, finishes, colors, molding styles, etc. We then present you with drawings and a project estimate.”

“Our company mission is to provide our clients with beautiful custom cabinets, countertops, and flooring by using the best technology and material, using professional designers, and talented craftsmen, and offering this quality and service at an affordable price,” continued Henderson, who has been with North Davis Cabinet and Design for ten years. “We can help you create your dream project for your home or business.”

North Davis Cabinet and Design’s Clearfield show room is located just off of Antelope and 300 West, and they’re open Monday through Thursday, 8am-5:30pm, and Fridays from 8am – 5pm; phone (801) 773-0374. For more information about all of the different products and styles they offer visit their company website at ndcabinet.com.
